Every part of the county can see severe weather. What changes from place to place is the ground, lot size and which permit office you deal with.
Murfreesboro
From older homes near the square to newer subdivisions in Blackman and along Veterans Parkway, most Murfreesboro homes are on slabs or crawl spaces. Attached garages make above-ground safe rooms and garage floor shelters popular. Permits go through the City of Murfreesboro.
Smyrna
Northwest of Murfreesboro along I-24, Smyrna has many newer neighborhoods with attached garages. The Town of Smyrna handles permits within its limits.
La Vergne
At the county's northwest edge toward Nashville, La Vergne has lots of slab homes with garages, which suit above-ground safe rooms well. Check with the City of La Vergne about permits.
Rockvale
Southwest of Murfreesboro, Rockvale has larger lots and plenty of new construction. If you're building, ask your builder about including a safe room in the plans.
Christiana
South of Murfreesboro, Christiana is rural, with bigger yards. In-ground shelters can work where soil is deep enough, but have the site checked for rock first.
Lascassas
Northeast of Murfreesboro, Lascassas is mostly rural homes on larger lots. A shelter close to the house matters, since getting to an outbuilding at night in a storm is risky.
Eagleville
In the county's far southwest corner, Eagleville is near where the April 2009 EF4 tornado first touched down. Rural lots here may suit any shelter type depending on rock depth.
